For a week in June 2017, 56 participants from 18 different countries were gathered at Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) for this year’s summer school. The programme offered both social and academic activities and there was no doubt that the topic of “uncertainty in electricity markets and system operation” quickly became a much debated subject.
Denmark has for a long time been known as a nation that puts green energy high on the agenda. Now, the Danish progress in green energy solutions has once again caught global attention as The World Bank elected Denmark as the world leading nation in energy, energy effectivity, and renewable energy. In addition, Denmark is also placed first in EU when it comes to export of energy technology.
With this record it is not a coincidence that many look towards Denmark for knowledge and advice on sustainable energy development. At the Technical University of Denmark, we have leading scientists in this field and we are always pleased to share our knowledge and advancements in research.
As a new initiative, the Energy Analytics and Markets research group at Center for Electric Power and Energy, DTU, started a summer school last year. The objective for the summer school is to educate students and industry professionals worldwide in modern challenges and optimisation of power system operation and electricity markets, and not least to expand professional networks as knowledge is shared among peers.

The summer school places great emphasis on diversity in teaching methods, including hands-on tutorials to learn about relevant techniques for handling uncertainties, and flip-the-classroom sessions where attendees presents their work and get feedback from experts. These experts, who also gave great lectures, include CEE members and renowned academics from e.g. University of Oxford, University of Toronto, Johns Hopkins University, Argonne National Laboratory, US, etc.
Again this year, the summer school received excellent feedback from the participants as 89 pct. of the participants declared that they had their expectations for the summer school either matched or exceeded, and 100 pct. of the participants would recommend the course to a colleague. One of the participants wrote: “My expectations were realized in three extents: new knowledge, new research topics, and expansion of my academic network”, and the team behind the summer school can once again review their hard work with great satisfaction as they round off one of the largest summer school cources in EES-UETP history.
