New professor at DTU to ensure efficient power components

The Department of Electrical Engineering just strengthened its core competencies in the area of power components for distributed energy systems with the appointment of Vassilios G. Agelidis as a new professor at the Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE). 

Professor Agelidis is an internationally recognized researcher with extensive experience in the area. “I am so excited to be joining CEE and DTU, and I look forward to collaborate with the Danish industry and other key stakeholders to ensure that converter-based components remain even more efficient, compact, reliable and cost effective as new technologies such as wide-band gap semiconductors become available that affect the entire power electronics system,” Professor Agelidis says.

Components based on power electronic converters will be increasing more dominant in the future power system at both generation and demand side. Therefore, developing efficient solutions that ensure a seamless interaction between the components and the power system will be a crucial aspect in the future energy system.

Key career highlights

  • Awarded the UK’s prestigious research fellowship for a young researcher, the EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (2004).
  • Established the Sir William Tyree Laboratory in Power Engineering, the ABB Technology Centre and enabled research in the area of smart grid and renewable energy integration and electric vehicle integration with the electricity grid at Sydney University.
  • Attracted the largest one-off Solar Flagships Research Infrastructure grant worth $47 million in total ($19 million for his own research team) at UNSW.
  • Received the Electrica Awards First Prize in 2010, an International Innovation contest organised by the Paris-based AREVA T&D.
  • Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK.
  • Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, USA) with the citation: for contributions to power electronics and renewable energy conversion and integration with electricity grids.
