The EcoGrid EU project

The aim of the EcoGrid EU project is to contribute to the European 20-20-20 goals by showing that it is possible to operate a distribution power system (on the Danish island of Bornholm) with more than 50% renewable energy sources (RES) making active use of new communication technology and innovative market solutions.

The EcoGrid EU concept will contribute to the operation of the transmission system by offering the TSOs additional balancing and ancillary services. EcoGrid EU is a large-scale demonstration of a complete power system.

The EcoGrid EU project will combine knowledge from previous EU funded projects into a large-scale demonstration where the outcome is substantial contribution to a "Road map for European Smart Grids deployment".

The Center for Electric Power and Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering is a partner in the EcoGrid EU project, which has been selected as the second best example of smart grid engagement of consumers. The award identifies the project as a model to follow.

The ISGAN Award of Excellence marks the recognition that the best smart grid deployments embrace and engage consumers as principal participants in the delivery of energy service. It recognizes that consumers can be partners with their energy service providers in delivering electric service that better suits the needs of the consumer, is less expensive and improves the reliability of customer energy services.

More than 40 projects were officially nominated from 15 different countries. The international jury chaired by Ronnie Belmans, Belgium, identifies EcoGrid EU as a model of smart grid engagement of consumers.

The ISGAN Award of Excellence has been launched by ISGAN and the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF) to promote clean energy transition, and to facilitate best practice and knowledge sharing. The award recognizes excellence in innovation, integration, and transformation of smart grid systems. The first-ever theme in 2014 was "Consumer Engagement & Empowerment".

ISGAN (International Smart Grid Action Network) is the Implementing Agreement for a Co-operative Programme on Smart Grids (ISGAN). ISGAN functions within a framework created by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and is supported by a Secretariat at the Korea Smart Grid Institute.

The winner of the Award was 'SmartView’ AMI Pilot – Entergy New Orleans (United States). Besides additionally eight projects were highlighted as finalists.
