Cost-Effective Electrical Energy Storage Systems in Low Voltage Grids

The adoption of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in distribution systems is increasing. New research suggests that price of batteries will fall dramatically in coming years and this significant drop in battery prices can widely affect industries and society and pave the way for a rapid transition to a cleaner energy system. In addition to the customer services, BESS can potentially be used for provision of the grid services for TSOs and DSOs in order to increase the value of the BESS for BESS owners, system operators and society in a modern and renewable-based power system.

The focus of this Postdoc is on the WP6 and WP7 of the EnergyLab Nordhavn project and the main objective is to develop a model for optimal operation of the BESS in distribution systems, considering the Nordhavn battery as a case. The feasible battery services are evaluated, suggestions for the battery control and management are provided, and the operating commands of the battery are investigated. Coordination between charging of the battery, renewable generation and EV fast charging are considered in the control of the BESS.
