Grid applications for High-Temperature PEM Fuel Cells

The SmartMEA project aims to investigate on grid applications for High-Temperature PEM fuel cells (HTFCs) and to improve the membrane manufacturing process to better fit the resultant requirements.

Compared to other types of fuel cells, HTFCs benefit from unique advantages that might open market opportunities previously discarded due to costs, systems complexity, and operational issues. In particular, HTFC allow for:

  • Use of reformate hydrogen without the need for advanced purification systems
  • Simplified water management systems
  • High quality heat recovery potential
  • Fast startup due to the lower operation temperature range

At DTU-CEE I carry on the task to identify and simulate suitable grid applications. The focus is on exploiting all the energy exchanges that hydrogen systems allow in order to increase the system flexibility and economic performance:

  • Electrolytic hydrogen
  • Heat recovery
  • Power to gas and hydrogen vehicles
  • Reformate hydrogen

Simulations take advantage of Mixed-Integer Linear Programming models for optimizing the operation of hydrogen systems in a given electricity market. | To be completed august 2017
