Superconducting Drivetrain

Superconducting wind turbines have the potential to enable cost effective large multi MW wind turbines with focus on direct drive offshore installation. High Temperature Superconductors (HTS), such as YBCO or in general (Re)BCO coated conductors, can be employed to design and construct wind turbine generators with exceptional power/torque density which doubles the one of the permanent magnet generator.

The Postdoc project evaluates an HTS direct drive generators designs with respect to their cost, efficiency, easy of manufacturing and reliability in effort to identify the HTS drivetrain concept which ensures the lowest overall cost of energy, CoE. The HTS coils in the operating conditions of HTS drivetrain is based on H-formulations model of superconducting materials and used for evaluation of energy loss and efficiency in general.
