The tutorial done by Associate Professor Zhe Zhang from the Electronics Group at DTU Electrical Engineering on bidirectional DC-DC converters with wide bandgap devices received much attention during IEEE ITEC Asia-Pacific 2017.
The 2017 IEEE International Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo, Asia-Pacific (ITEC Asia-Pacific 2017) was held in Harbin, China, on August 7-10, 2017.
ITEC Asia-Pacific 2017 is part of a global series of IEEE “ITEC” conferences, all dedicated to promoting the development of electrical technologies for transportation, land, rail, air, and sea.
The conference is replete with distinguished plenary speakers, tutorials, and special sessions given by top professionals from industry and academia, panels of expert discussions in state-of-art technologies, and ample opportunities to network and make new acquaintances in the area of transportation electrifications.
In addition, the latest research achievements through more than 300 high quality technical papers were reported and published.
Associate Professor Zhe Zhang from our Electronics Group was invited to give a tutorial “Advanced bidirectional DC-DC converters with emerging wide-bandgap semiconductor devices” due to his contributions and impact in the research of power electronic converters with silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) devices in recent years.
During this four-hour tutorial, Zhe introduced the fundamentals, the analysis methods, and the design criteria of bidirectional dc-dc converters including both non-isolated and isolated manners.
Emerging of wide-bandgap (WBG) devices provide power electronic converters with an enormous potential of enhancing efficiency as well as increasing power density - however, new challenges associated with even faster commutation, such as minimizing loop impedance, reducing stress on magnetic components, and limiting thermal stress, have become critical.
The design of bidirectional DC converters equipped with WBG devices and the technical trends e.g. soft-switching and dead-time optimization, were presented in this tutorial.
As a very popular topic, this tutorial has received much attention from researchers, engineers, and students working in power electronics, including the conference general chair Prof. Dianguo Xu.
And with potential partners from industry and academia, future research cooperation intentions in this area were identified accordingly.
Moreover, Zhe Zhang also served as session chair in Track 8: Smart Grid, Electrical Infrastructure, and V2G during this conference.
