INTER-NOISE is the largest international gathering of experts in noise control engineering and has been held each year since 1972 at different venues around the world. The congress includes a large technical program and an exhibition of the latest products and instrumentation for noise control engineering.
This years congress was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre which is located on the banks of the Yarra River and this years theme was: Improving the world through noise control.
Efrén Fernandez Grande from the Acoustic Technology Group participated.

The congress is currently sponsored by the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE), which is a worldwide consortium of organizations concerned with noise control, acoustics and vibration. The primary focus of the congress is in acoustics, and particularly on the disciplines that deal with reducing and controlling unwanted sounds and unwanted vibrations that affect our quality of life. Additionally, there is also quite a large focus on sound quality, and general acoustics.
Inter Noise is the largest congress in the field of noise control and Efrén believes that his participation is important because participants are able to present their findings and discuss ideas with fellow researchers. He continues "It is very useful to discuss our own work, and also hear what our peers in the acoustic community are working on. It is also a good opportunity to get in touch with industry, see the newest products and recent technological advances, and discuss possible collaboration".
Efrén states how the experiences from Inter Noise are relevant for future teaching and research. "It is very useful to discuss our research and the research of our others, because this provides a channel of information within the scientific community, in this case concerned with acoustics and noise. This contributes to the advancement of our scientific work. Besides the direct impact in our research, this also reflects in the quality of our research-based teaching, which in the long run is a very important element to sustain our good education in acoustics and the excellent reputation of Danish acoustics. It is also a good chance to promote collaboration with other institutions and industry."
Efrén goes on to tell more about the organisation of the congress... "It was very well organized, with many interesting technical sessions and very interesting keynote and plenary lectures. Some of the relevant lectures and sessions were in wind-turbine noise, sound visualization, vibro-acoustics, new acosutic measurement techiques, room and building acoustics and new materials. This year there were more than a thousand participants with more then 800 papers presented".
As mentioned earlier, the congress is currently sponsored by the International Institue on Noise Control Engineering (I-ince), of which the danish acoustical society is a member of, and it is organised by the hosting acoustical societies, I-INCE was founded in 1974 and interestingly enough one of the three original founders was Professor Fritz Ingerslev with the first international edition of the congress being held in Copenhaagen in 1973.
The next Inter Noise will take place in San Francisco in 2015, and will be organized by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the United States of America (INCE/USA) in cooperation with the Korean Society of Noise and Vibration Engineering (KSNVE)(http://internoise2015.com/
