Modern electricity distribution grids with high share of solar energy

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are among the fastest growing power generation technologies in the world. It is anticipated that the majority of the coming installations are interfaced with the electric distribution grids. Despite the benefits of PVs, there are challenges associated with high PV penetration, which may give rise to security and quality issues in the distribution systems.

The project will investigate the main operational barriers of increasing PV penetration at the distribution grids. The grid impact from PVs will be studied by exploiting the state-of-the-art inverter technologies to support the system operation. The effects from incorporation of SmartGrid functionalities and ancillary services into the PV power systems will also be examined.

The project will provide technical solutions to facilitate the PV integration into distribution systems with less reinforcement of the current power grid.
