About EnergyLab Nordhavn

The project “EnergyLab Nordhavn – new urban energy infrastructures” will develop and demonstrate future energy solutions.

The project utilizes Copenhagen’s Nordhavn as a full-scale smart city energy lab and demonstrates how electricity and heating, energy-efficient buildings and electric transport can be integrated into an intelligent, flexible and optimized energy system.

The project participants are: DTU, City of Copenhagen, CPH City & Port Development, HOFOR, DONG Energy, ABB, Balslev, Danfoss, CleanCharge, METRO THERM, Glen Dimplex and the PowerLab facilities.

The project is supported by EUPD (Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme) and runs from 2015-2019.

When residents later this month will move in to newly renovated apartments in Frihavnstårnet in Nordhavn 13 apartments have agreed to participate in the EnergyLab Nordhavn project. By joining EnergyLab Nordhavn the residents will take part in the demonstration of future energy solutions.

In practice the residents will contribute with data concerning their energy consumption and will in return experience intelligent control of heating and lighting.

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate how the consumption of energy can be optimized through control and collaboration of the system in the building and the overall energy system – without compromising on the residents comfort of course.

The project management is very pleased that the project is now entering the next phase.

”It is an important step for the project to see the first residents move in to the buildings. Data from the apartments and the option of intelligently controlling the energy consumption in the new buildings are important experiences when developing the future energy systems. We are therefore extremely pleased that the developer, Boll+ and not least the new residents have decided to join the project”, says Christoffer Greisen, Project Manager, EnergyLab Nordhavn, DTU.

Intelligent buildings links the consumer and the energy system

Going forward an increasingly amount of the produced energy will be fluctuating and the need for a flexible energy system will only rise. To find out how to achieve a dynamic energy market including both production, distribution, consumption and storage it is key to explore how energy is consumed. By using data from the residents in Frihavnstårnet the demonstration will show us how the apartments and the residents can adjust their energy consumption to a fluctuating production.

ABB and Balslev are among the partners in the EUDP funded project running from 2015-2019. In this specific demonstration ABB is responsible for designing and building the electrical panels while Balslev has been heading the design (project) as well as negotiating and establishing contact to developer, entrepreneur and residents.
