Implementing a large-scale demonstration of a real-time market for distributed energy resources is the core task of EcoGrid EU.
Crucial for the success of the project is how to recruit 2,000 electricity customers on Bornholm to participate in the project.
Will the customers allow fully automated equipment to schedule their electric heating within their comfort bands? Will the customers do anything manually to take advantage of periods with low electricity prices and eg do the laundry at a different time?
Motivated by Environmental Benefits
EcoGrid EU survey and interviews of electricity customers showed that a very large group of the respondents were positive to real-time tariffs and wants to be flexible and use electric equipment when electricity prices were low.
A very high percentage of the respondents (72%) would accept remote/automatic control of their household equipment.

What is EcoGrid EU?
EcoGrid EU is a large-scale demonstration of a real-time market for distributed energy resources. Advanced meters and ICT solutions will enable residential electricity customers to offer TSOs additional balancing services.
The project will find solutions for efficient managing of a real power system with more than 50 % renewable energy. 2000 citizens on Bornholm will by means of more flexible consumption participate in the demonstration.
The total budget of EcoGrid EU is € 21 million of which EU finance more than half.
