Analytics and Implementation of Consumer-centric Electricity Markets

By: Tiago Sousa

In the future, small-scale resources such as prosumers (i.e. houses with solar panels and storage capabilities) or electric vehicles, will play a more prominent role in the electricity market, due to the advances in ICT, renewable technologies and smart grids. Prosumers are willing to actively participate in future electricity markets. This paradigm challenges the common operation of the entire power system. Energy digitalization and sharing economy are principles to be considered in modeling the structures of this future consumer-centric electricity market. The peer-to-peer concept seen in computer science can be consider to implement such structures.

Thus, the main objective of this Post-doc is to develop new structures that enable a more consumer-centric electricity market, e.g. community-based or in a peer-to-peer framework. The community-based market assumes a community of prosumers that contains a third entity to coordinate its members. On the other hand, a peer-to-peer framework assumes that each prosumer directly trades among each others. However, one has to look to the grid integration for a large deployment of these small-scale resources. Another topic of this Post-doc is to identify new services that prosumers can provide for the grid operation, such as peak shaving or reactive provision.
