Description
The PhD project aims at establishing technical and scientific methods and tools for characterizing wind farm’s electrical main components and their interaction, taking into account external electrical conditions, operational conditions and others. These tools should ensure the electrical compatibility of main components with each other (component compatibility) and with environment (system compatibility). The created guidelines should be general, not limited to one specific design concept or manufacturer. Furthermore, the concept of component and system compatibility will be defined and suitable tools and methods will be developed to describe it.

The main focus of the PhD project on the electrical compatibility includes that analysis, simulations and tests of the chosen existing electrical components and systems have to be chosen carefully. The reason for this is the complexity of available component models (measured terminal equivalents or analytical models), which usually causes unacceptable high calculation times of the numerical simulations. In order to identify risky combinations, a large number of simulations have to be conducted under systematic parameter variation. This is only possible with comparable short calculation times, which means that an important part of the project must be the definition of a necessary and sufficient level of details in the component specifications.

The work will be conducted in close collaboration with wind turbine manufacturers, OEMs and users. In that way, the project is ensured detailed support on components and systems. Also, this gives the possibility to include experiences from different component design plus operational experiences from the users.

Finally, the project will be concluded by presenting guidelines and recommendations for design of electrical components for wind turbines according to developed compatibility rules. In such a way, the risk of critical component combination can be reduced already at an early stage of wind energy based power systems.
