Project description
The application of wind power as a renewable energy source is studied with specific emphasis on large-scale integration. Several countries have planned high wind power participation in the active energy matrix. The special characteristics of the wind turbines power production arise problems to the control and the flux of power in the network that can cause problems to the power system stability and quality.
As indicated in the title, the Power System Quality and Stability problems related to high wind power penetration are the main topic of the study. The main factors for Power Quality and Power System Stability are showed as follow in brief:
- Power Quality Problems - the turbulence and coherence of the wind is modelled and applied to dynamic wind turbines as well as to wind farms. The power produced is then analysed in order to verify the voltage quality.
- Power System Stability - the large integration of wind farms in areas of the power system is analysed. The large integration arise several relevant topics, here two topics are analysed:
° Voltage Stability - the large wind power influences on the voltage stability is analysed in terms of limits of power transfer. The studies take into account the network and the wind turbines characteristics and focus on the slow dynamic phenomenon.
° Power Oscillations - the interactions between large wind farms and the power system need to be analysed focusing on the frequency control. The wind speed characteristics of spatial correlation in high distances are taken into account and suitable models to the power system analysis presented.
